Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and self defence system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting; practitioners wear a traditional uniform a 'Gi' which allows for a variety of grips and specialist submission holds to be utilised by practitioners.

BJJ was formed from Judo ground-fighting (newaza) fundamentals that were taught to Carlos Gracie and Luiz França by Mitsuyo Maeda and Soshihiro Satake.

BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (GI and No-GI) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition or self-defence.

No-GI Jiu-Jitsu is also referred to as 'grappling' or 'submission grappling'. It is a fast and dynamic system; at the academy we draw on the various coaches experiences & blend techniques drawn from BJJ, Freestyle WrestlingJudo.

Practitioners will typically wear MMA style board shorts and a rash guard (similar to a surf style rash guard); there is typically a much less restrictive rule-set operated in No-Gi classes compared to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Gi; this allows for dynamic takedowns; chokes and a vast array of submission holds to be applied to the opponent.

It is a foundational skill for Mixed Martial Arts training and our academy is one of the leading academies in the country for No-Gi/submission grappling; with multiple medallist’s & champions in events such as the NAGA European circuit (France, Germany, Ireland  & United Kingdom).
